MEXICO BAT CAVE SHOOT FOR DISCOVERY CHANNEL
Flashback to our shoot in a Mexican cave for the Discovery series, ‘Car V Wild’. One of my favourite pictures taken on a cheap little Nixon Coolpix AW100. It worked great in low light and survived being dropped in a river of sludgy bat shit. The pic features Director of Photography Dan Etheridge and the legendary Bill Wu taking a hammering under a raging waterfall. Dan covered the abseil into a sink-hole and cave system known by the locals as the ‘Diablos (devil’s) hole’, all on a basic Canon XL 305 in a waterproof housing.
The ropes were put in place, by Adventure Collective’s, Stani and Meg who also got the the 2nd camera and rest the crew to the foot of the ascent. It took some planning and a hack through a patch of jungle and then a swim upstream through a torrent of bat shit to get into position. Camera Assistant, Jim floated all our kit in, including all the sound gear in Peli cases. Great shoot and it was worth all the effort, even though it did take a while to get the bat poo out of every orifice that evening in camp. #nixon #pelicases #canon #mexico #batcaves
